The Seattle One-Act Play project and BAKER Theatre Workshop
Apply now for one of two $1,000 commissions to write an original one-act play. Deadline to apply is June 16, 2022.
Plays will be performed, as workshop performances, at the end of July, at Hugo House in Seattle.
One Commission will be for a playwright age 18 or younger. The second will be for a playwright of any age.
Note to Teachers
The Seattle One-Act Play project (SOAP) wants to offer a $1,000 commission to an under-18 playwright in the Seattle area, and we hope you can help. The commissioned play will have a workshop performance at the Hugo House on July 23.
We know the enormous impact that theatre teachers can have on young people, and we hope this opportunity will be a useful tool as you work to inspire, guide ,and celebrate their work.
In addition to the $1,000 commission fee, the commissioned playwright will be assigned a playwriting mentor from the ACT Theatre and will have the opportunity but not the obligation to work with that mentor in completing the full draft of the play.
We’ll also assemble a panel of actors and writers to offer notes on a draft in progress two weeks before the deadline, drawn from the ACT Theatre and Hugo House communities.
We hope you can share news of the commission opportunity with your students, and if you can, help them think through the application for, which follows below this note.
All submitters of commission applications will be invited to audition for roles in the workshop performance of the commissioned play at Hugo House.
With great gratitude,
Peter Temes, Program Leader
